| Staines 1999 was always going to be a tough act to follow. Nevertheless, Staines 2000 saw the Cardinals Thames Cup eight roll out of the boat house for one final blast. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| With the crew's training since Henley three weeks before ranging from not-very-much to nothing-at-all, the eight had its work cut out. With a big support crew on the bank, the Cardinals Thames VIII - racing as Senior 2 - pulled off a 1½ length win over Vesta to move into the final against Walbrook Rowing Club. This race was to prove more challenging with both crews neck and neck all the way down the course but with Walbrook claiming a 3 foot victory. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Murray McLeod Jones and James Morton later subbed into the boat to row in the Senior 1 Eights final. Richard Adams stroked the crew off the start at 48 strokes per minute to give a canvas lead over Maidenhead who soon clawed it back to produce another neck and neck crowd-pleaser. Even the umpires took a while to work out who had won but finally awarded Maidenhead a one foot victory. Interestingly, the Senior 1 eight recorded an identical course time to the Senior 2 eight (1m22s). |
